Ceramics 3 is an advance class with the opportunity to get Honors credit. In this class we will be working on developing well thought out and planned out compositions and designs that communicate concepts, ideas and voice. Students will learn new techniques on the wheel, with coiling, slab building and pinching. They will also be learning new construction techniques using one and two part molds. We will look at several different ceramics artists for inspiration. Students will analyze and critique their own works along with their peers works.

Project 1: Funky Houses
Project: Students will create Funky Slab houses. They will use found objects to roll out on their slabs to create interesting textures, then they will cut out their slabs to create a leaning, crooked, or slumping house. They will allow their slabs to get to leather hard and then use scratching and slipping to attach them together to create the house form. Students will then add details such as windows, doors, chimneys, steps and stoops to give the house a unique look and create points of Emphasis. Once the pieces are leather hard/bone dry students will put a wash of liquid under-glaze over the surface and then wash it away so that it is left in the cracks and crevices of the texture. Pieces will then be fired. A Matt glaze will be applied after on the whole form. Pieces will be fired and when completed turned in for a grade.
Techniques:
Standard 2
Envision and critique art using specific criteria to discuss and evaluate works of art in order to be able to observe, describe, analyze, interpret and judge how artists apply materials and processes in a meaningful way.
Standard 3
Invent and discover to create. Using personal meaning; asses and produce works of art with various materials including application of new technology.
Requirements: Projects Must:
Texture-is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or
smooth, soft or hard. Textures do not always feel the way they look; for example,
a drawing of a porcupine may look prickly, but if you touch the drawing, the
paper is still smooth.
Vocabulary:
Matt Glaze-A dull glaze surface, not very reflective when fired. It needs a slow cooling period or it may turn shiny.
Wash-technique resulting in a semi-transparent layer of color created by deluding the underglaze before applying to the clay.
Principle:
Emphasis- is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the
artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
Techniques:
- Under-glaze wash
- Review:
- Slab building
- Glazing and under glazing techniques
- Piercing
- Attachments
- carving
