In drawing one we will learn to look at and observe the world around us. By doing so we will see the incredible details, patterns, and forms that create our environment. The observations that we make will help to develop our abilities to draw from real life. We will explore several different drawing mediums such as graphite, pen and ink, charcoal, and colored pencil, and the unique marks that each one makes. We will drawing contour lines, still life, portraits and more.

Project 1: Contour Hand Drawings
Project: Students will learn what a contour hand drawing is. They will first complete two contour hand drawing exercises in class to practice on their skills. One will be a blind contour hand drawing where students will draw their hands with our lifting up their pencil and not looking at their drawing at all. The next will be a cross contour hand drawing where they will draw contour lines going across the hand illustrating the high and low points of their hands form. After they have practiced these skills they will create a drawing on a 18”x12” paper that incorporates 5 contour hand drawings showing different gestures. Each hand will be a different color of colored pencil. They will be expected to look at their hand 80% to 90% of the time and at their drawing only 10% to 20% of the time. They also will focus on good composition and using the whole paper space intentionally.
Techniques:
Contour Drawing Viewing objects closely Standards:
Standard 2
Envision and critique art using specific criteria to discuss and evaluate works of art in order to be able to observe, describe, analyze, interpret and judge how artists apply materials and processes in a meaningful way.
Standard 3
Invent and discover to create. Using personal meaning; asses and produce works of art with various materials including application of new technology.
Requirements: Projects Must:
Use contour line Technique Have 5 hand gestures Use a different color per hand Be drawn using an interesting composition
Element:
Line-is a mark with greater length than width. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin.
Vocabulary:
Contour Line-a continuous line that both outlines and captures details of the subject being drawn
Principle:
Balance-is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.
If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel
stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are
similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different
but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central
point and may be similar.
Project 2: Upside Down Drawing
Project: Students will learn the upside down drawing technique to help them draw images more accurately. They will begin this by copying a line drawing done by Picasso of the composer Stravinsky. Students will take the copy of Stravisky turn it upside down, use a sheet to block out all but an inch of the picture. They will copy this inch using sighting and their pencil to measure special relationships, then they will move the sheet of paper down another inch and repeat. They will do this until they copy the whole image. After the have learned and practiced this they will find an image (must be a photo) on the internet and print it off. The will use the upside down drawing technique to draw this image accurately. They only have to do a line drawing but if they want to go above and beyond they can shade it as well.

Proportion-is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number)
relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer
to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.
